Next up in our member spotlight series is Stacy Hamill. What began as a way to reclaim time and headspace after having her second child turned into a remarkable running journey. From Couch to 5K to completing two marathons, Stacy shows us just how far you can go with a little support and a lot of determination.

How long have you been running with CRC?
2 years
What made you start running?
After having my second child, I was looking for a way to get my fitness back and to find some headspace – something that is hard to find in those first few months with an infant! Having stopped and started running in the past, I needed something which was social, but which would also make me accountable. When I saw the advert for the CRC’s Couch to 5K program, I thought I would give it a go! Two years later and running has been part of my week ever since and the club has helped me go from a non-runner to completing two marathons in the past year.
What motivated you to take that first step into running? What was the biggest challenge you faced, did you have any low points, and how did you overcome any challenges you faced?
There haven’t been too many low points in all honesty, since joining the club. In September of last year, however, I thought my plans to run Amsterdam Marathon the October were going to go out the window when that ‘niggle’ in the knee put my training plan on hold. The coaches and other runners within the club were able to point me in the direction of someone who could help and the support of the friends I have made within the club, helped me to complete the marathon and I’ll always be grateful.
Have you noticed any improvements in your fitness, mental health, or overall well-being?
Absolutely. I’ve never been as fit as I am now and can’t believe I’ve stuck at it. Running has improved my overall fitness, has boosted my self-esteem and is an integral part of maintaining good mental health. Don’t get me wrong, there were times during the marathon training where I was questioning life choices, but running with the club has had such a positive impact on my well-being as a whole.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your running journey so far?
The most rewarding moment of my running journey so far was travelling to Amsterdam with the club to complete the marathon there. It was the first marathon for a lot of the runners and to see everyone do so well (and get to celebrate in style after) was amazing.
Have you made new friendships or connections through running?
Ha! The running joke in our house is that I see more of my running girls than I do with anyone! This has been possibly the most surprising and wonderful part of joining the club. I have made a group of friends that I hope will remain with me for life through running. There are some things you can’t really go through without building relationships with people and running for four hours straight is definitely one of them!
What is your proudest running achievement so far?
I think my proudest achievement was completing the couch to 5k program. I wasn’t sure I’d get through it as it was really tough going postpartum. I was so proud of myself for completing that parkrun and it led the way for every other milestone since.
