We’re shining a spotlight on Bronagh Fletcher, whose running journey started during the pandemic and has since taken her all the way to the Amsterdam Marathon. Her story is one of unexpected beginnings, personal growth, and the power of community. Let’s hear from Bronagh herself.

How long have you been running with CRC?
2 years
What made you start running?
When they shut down the gyms during the pandemic, I couldn’t believe it, I thought lifting weights was essential! With no other choice, I reluctantly started running. At first, it was more of a jog/walk, but I kept at it. Then one day at Mass, I met Ailis, who suggested that I join CRC. God works in mysterious ways.
What motivated you to take that first step into running? What was the biggest challenge you faced, did you have any low points, and how did you overcome any challenges you faced?
I used to be absolutely terrified of races, the logistics of figuring out where to go, where to park, where to pee! Comber 10k was my first race, Kelly picked up on my anxiety from my questions on WhatsApp and even though we had never met, she offered me a lift. I was so grateful!
Plus, with so many club members at most races, the atmosphere is great craic, which definitely helps calm the nerves!
Have you noticed any improvements in your fitness, mental health, or overall well-being?
My physical health, along with my mental and emotional well-being, has improved massively. Running with the club has been a huge motivator—everyone is so encouraging and supportive. Honestly, I wouldn’t have kept running if it weren’t for CRC. And getting out for a run with my buddies is the best part— the miles fly by and you really get to know someone on a long chatty Sunday run.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your running journey so far? Have you made new friendships or connections through running?
I’ve made incredible friendships in CRC. Coming from a small village in Tyrone, I’ve always missed that tight-knit sense of community—but I’ve found it again here. The members genuinely look out for each other. When Storm Eowyn left us without power for a week, I had so many offers of hot showers (thanks again to Nicola and Karen), hot meals, a place to stay, laundry service, and even phone charging pack. I was completely overwhelmed by the kindness—who knew joining a running club came with emergency disaster relief benefits?
What is your proudest running achievement so far? Do you have any future running goals or races or targets planned?
Completing the Amsterdam Marathon is my proudest achievement—it was something I never, in a million years, thought I’d do! But thanks to the incredible coaching from our amazing CRC coaches, along with the endless motivation and encouragement from the members, it actually happened. Now I am training for Belfast Marathon in May. FOMO really does have a lot to answer for 😆
